Destined for Glory

By Mark DeSio
In our daily lives, we face many hardships and difficulties that can lead us to despair...

Romans 8:18

I consider that the sufferings of this present time are as nothing compared with the glory to be revealed for us.

In today's first reading, Saint Paul reminds us that we are destined for glory. In our daily lives, we face many hardships and difficulties that can lead us to despair. We are constantly hearing of evil and sin in the world; this can harden our hearts and leave us without hope. In this letter of Saint Paul to the Romans, we find hope by remembering the glory that awaits us in Jesus Christ. In the words of Saint John Chrysostom: "Whatever these sufferings may be, they belong to this present life, but the blessings to come stretch out forever." In 1 Corinthians 2:9, we are given the following description of heaven: "What eye has not seen, and ear has not heard, and what has not entered the human heart, what God has prepared for those who love him." Saint John Chrysostom continues: "Since Paul had no way of giving a detailed description of these or of putting them before us in human language, he gives them a name which is used of things we especially desire: glory."
