Dependent on the Divine

By Fr. Lou Turcotte
For today's memorial, I decided to google "guardian angel," and let me tell you...

"Whoever humbles himself like this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven."

Matthew 18:4

Since today is the memorial of the guardian angels, I decided to google "guardian angel," and let me tell you – there are some interesting ideas out there! These angelic beings are most often depicted watching us as we sleep, giving someone a big hug, or making sure a child doesn't fall off a cliff. (Listen, folks - don't leave your toddlers by cliffs unattended!) While these images are certainly vivid, they don't quite capture the full meaning of our guardians. Today Jesus tells us to become humble like children because their angels "always look upon the face of my heavenly father." That's an important detail! Our guardian angel, like all angels, is a messenger – they connect us to God Himself. So if our angel is constantly in God's presence, that means that we are in constant communication with our heavenly Father! For people of faith, true humility means to be totally dependent on God. The child isn't afraid to rely on others, and is always quick to let their needs be known! Today, our guardian angel reminds us that we are connected to a God who cares for us. So for whatever "cliffs" might be in your life today, don't forget to ask Him for help!

In what area of my life do I need to become more dependent on God?

Heavenly Father, in all of the challenges of life and desires of our heart, let our guardian angel bring us back to You!
