Courageous Docility

By Fr. Chuck Dornquast
With their lives on the line, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abdnego had plenty of things the could have done...

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered King Nebuchadnezzar, “There is no need for us to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If our God, whom we serve, can save us* from the white-hot furnace and from your hands, O king, may he save us! But even if he will not, you should know, O king, that we will not serve your god or worship the golden statue which you set up.”

Dn. 3:16-18

With their lives on the line, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abdnego had plenty of things they could have done. They could have turned away from their faith, they could have fought the king, they could have wailed and complained. What they did do, however, was to do nothing. They practiced docility, trusting that the Lord would do. They relied upon divine providence. The were courageously docile.

Where in my life is the Lord inviting me to trust in his providence?

Jesus, help me to know the times when you are asking me to let you act for me.
