Matthew 21:42
Jesus said to them, "Did you never read in the Scriptures: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; by the Lord has this been done, and it is wonderful in our eyes?"
You've probably heard the phrase, "one man's trash is another man's treasure." When I was kid, some 40+ years ago, we lived near where some construction was going on. Now back in the day, a bunch of us wanted to build a 'fort' or clubhouse. Boys like to do this kind of thing. So we would go to the big construction dumpster where all of the construction remnant would be and purge wood and other materials that was to be trashed. We built ourselves a fine little structure, or so we thought at the time. After a couple of storms and wind, it toppled. We didn't know what we were doing. We didn't know how to build and it collapsed.
Today's Gospel finds Jesus reminding the people about the builders rejecting a stone that would become the cornerstone of their faith from then until today. Jesus was talking about the builders being the Pharisees who controlled the synagogues….they were rejecting the teachings of Jesus. Yesterday we read about the teaching that we should not put our faith in men but in God. Men make mistakes. Jesus is perfect. We should not reject the teachings of Jesus but instead use them to build up the church on earth. Many, including ourselves, will sometimes reject teachings because they don't conform to our world, to our lifestyles. Instead we pick and choose. But God's law never wavers, nor does Christ's love for us. As Jesus is the cornerstone of the Church, so he should be the cornerstone of your personal life, your home life, your work life…all of it. If you build your world around THAT cornerstone, your life will never collapse.
