Conditions for Discipleship

By Kody Dahlke
In today's Gospel reading, Jesus lays out the conditions for discipleship...

Mark 8:34-35

He summoned the crowd with his disciples and said to them, "Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it."

In today's Gospel reading, Jesus lays out the conditions for discipleship of those who wish to follow him. While the conditions are plainly laid out, the call to follow Jesus and his teachings are difficult, especially into today's day and age when some of his teachings are sometimes looked down upon. To be a disciple of Jesus we must lay all that we have at his feet and allow him to do with it whatever he wishes. This may lead to many of us in our daily lives having to make sacrifices like kneeling down for more time in prayer or answering a call that the Lord has laid out before us. However we see the Lord moving in our lives, we must be willing to give all that we have to him with the hope that we will do enough to receive eternal salvation through Jesus. Let us do as the Lord says and deny ourselves, take up our crosses, and follow the Lord wherever he may lead us. Ask the Lord today what it is that he wishes for you to do to become one of his disciples.
