Comforts and Securities

By Fr. Chuck Dornquast
Jesus may not have made the best boy scout...

Luke 9:3

He said to them, "Take nothing for the journey, neither walking stick, nor sack, nor food, nor money, and let no one take a second tunic.

Jesus may not have made the best boy scout. On the surface he certainly wasn't teaching His followers the boy scout motto of always being prepared for whatever circumstance. He seems in fact to be setting them up for failure.

Jesus rids His followers of any of their comforts and securities. He invites them to trust entirely on God's providential care. He invites them to see how God can provide through others. So often we cling to our own security blankets. We trust our intelligence, our skills, our phones, our financial resources to get us through or provide for us. Jesus invites his followers to radically trust in His word. Often we can avoid those moments where we have to depend on grace. We can avoid the hard conversations, the uncomfortable encounters or the troubling silence within. But it is there that we can be courageous and allow God to truly be God and allow ourselves to be cared for by Him.
