Christus Vincit!

By Spencer Grant
I don't think I need to tell you this: life is hard...

I have told you this so that you might have peace in me. In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world.

John 16:33

I don’t think I need to tell you this: life is hard. I’m always reminded of Rocky Balboa’s speech to his son in the 2006 movie of the same name: “It's a very mean and nasty place and I don't care how tough you are,  it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life.” This is a key element of Jesus’ message to his disciples in today’s Gospel. “In the world you will have trouble.” Philosophies and religions around the world all seek to face this issue. The American way is exemplified in Rocky’s response; you’ll get knocked down but it’s up to you to get back up and keep fighting. This is not Christ’s answer. “Take Courage, I have overcome the world.” Jesus fought the fight for us. He entered into our suffering and took it upon himself in His Passion. He conquered it, however, in His Resurrection which we continue to celebrate in this wonderful Easter season. Through virtue of our Baptism, which Paul preaches in the first reading, we now share in Christ’s victory. Christus vincit!

How can I take courage in Christ's victory, that he won for me, rather than stubbornly rely on my own efforts to face the sufferings of life?

Lord Jesus, we trust in your victory, help us to take courage in it through the workings of the Holy Spirit in our daily lives.

Did you know...

Spencer Grant is currently in his Senior year at St. John Vianney College Seminary in Miami, Florida. He was born and raised in Tampa (or as he says Champa) and has been a parishioner at St. Timothy Parish in Lutz since he was eleven years old when his family joined the Church. When not busy with studies, Spencer can often be seen on the golf course or watching the Bucs, Lightning, or Rays (you know, winning teams) as he has been since childhood. Please continue to keep him in your prayers as he continues his discernment towards priesthood.

Pray with us for the men and women discerning the priesthood and religious life. To pray for our seminarians by name or to find out more about the Diocese of St. Petersburg vocations office, click here
