Christ Washed Our Feet

John 13:14-15

If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another's feet. I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do.

"As the people Israel were freed from slavery to Egypt, so Christ frees us from the slavery of sin and the power of death." (Youcat 95) At the Last Supper, Jesus not only intitutes the Eucharist, he also left another lasting memorial action for his disciples to follow: the washing of their feet. In this amazing scene, the God of the universe, Jesus Christ, stoops down and washes the feet of sinful men. As St. Paul in Romans says, "God shows his love for us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us." We could also say, while we were still sinners, Christ washed our feet. He even washed the feet of the disciple that would betray him. If God could do that for us, can we follow his example and serve others with gentleness and humility?
