Call out to The Father

By Connor Penn
Without a doubt, last month was very difficult for all of us; March brought unexpected turbulence and trials...

Psalm 18:7

"In my distress I called upon the Lord, and he heard my voice."

Without a doubt, last month was very difficult for all of us; March brought unexpected turbulence and trials. Truth be told, I was happy to "flip" the calendar past March back on Wednesday. Yet now as we move into this new month of April, we prepare to celebrate Holy Week—which begins this Sunday.

And for Jesus, the events of Holy Week also brought turbulence and trials. Yet in the midst of his trial, his heart echoed the words of our Psalm response from today's Mass: "In my distress, I called upon the Lord, and he heard my voice." Through the events of Holy Week, Jesus calls out to His Father in confidence that he does indeed hear his voice; indeed, at the very moment before his death, he calls out "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit."

What trial am I currently going through? As we begin this new month, what unexpected turbulence has carried over from March? Today, make a simple prayer of confident and courageous trust, echoing the words of our Psalm; in our own words, may we say, "Father, in this present trial, I know that you hear me."

I make good use of the calendar feature on my phone, although I am also frequently setting reminders for myself because I am forgetful!
