Cafeteria Christians

By John Morris
When I was a kid, it was a treat to go to Morrison's...

2 Corinthians 11:3

But I am afraid that, as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts may be corrupted from a sincere and pure commitment to Christ.

When I was a kid, it was a treat to go to Morrison's Cafeteria.  I'd get the tray and the first thing in the line were scrumptious desserts. Then veggies, meats, and drinks.  I'd pick what I wanted (under mom's watchful eye), only taking the things I liked (no broccoli or brussel sprouts).  A number of years ago, I was introduced to the term "Cafeteria Catholics."  Same can be applicable for "Cafeteria Christians." But what does that mean?  Jesus and the Church through the centuries gave us truths on how to live a good Christian life.  Live the Golden Rule, love one another, obey the commandments, etc.  But in our everyday lives, do we do this?  Do we pick and chose our own rules to follow or the rules of society?  I say we probably don't.  Sure, we might try, but we often make excuse for our shortcomings and failings.  The societal rules don't always conform to the Christian life.  Then we justify our situation because we try to interpret what Jesus meant, which can often be us twisting his words so that it fits our situation; that way, we feel better about ourselves.  Cohabitation, abortion, stealing, etc. can all fall into that category.  We want to justify our actions because of some reason that we come up with.  All valid, but is it right?  Would Jesus approve?

Paul is reminding the Corinthians today that he's not too happy with their excuses.  He even reminds them that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent, our thoughts and actions may be deceived by worldly influences.  We are not to be of the world but live in the world for Jesus through Jesus.  In our pure hearts, we know the difference between right and wrong, yet because we have become so worldly, that we have forgotten our roots.  Pray today for a pure heart, that Jesus will put truth and love back into your heart.
