COURAGE TO LOVE

By John Morris
Do I show the same love to strangers as I do to my.....

This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one for one another."  John 13:35

Love is that outward sign of God's presence in people and how they share that love.  It is easy to share love with family and friends, but a bit more difficult with strangers.  The kind of love our Lord speaks of in this Sunday's gospel from John is a deep love, what we call agape love.  It is unconditional.  There is no judgment on the person, no expectation for love to be returned.  It is simply love at its purest form.  It's holding the hand of a stranger when they are at the end of life.  It's giving consolation to the less fortunate who needs to know that God is present in the midst of despair.  Imagine of everyone just slowed down their lives, took their time and listened to one another.  If people were just more patient with each other, our society and our individual lives would be less stressful and become more peaceful.  This helps lead all to a more loving environment.

In the reading today we know that the persecution of Christians was right around the corner, and for the faith to grow, despite the hardships, the disciples had to display love.  They loved so much that they died for it, becoming martyrs for the faith, all for the glory of God.  They had great courage to face their enemies, to stand for what they believed in.   Do we have that same courage?  Do we proclaim the faith despite the troubles that may come?  You can invite people to the faith just by showing love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control…but the greatest is love.

Question for Reflection
Do I have the same courage as the disciples to face my enemies with love?

Lord, give me the grace to be kind and loving in the face of personal persecution.
