Bloom Where You're Planted

By Nicholas Gunn
I agree with Jesus that our spiritual lives are very much like seeds being planted...

"But the seed sown on rich soil is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold." Matthew 13:23

I agree with Jesus that our spiritual lives are very much like seeds being planted. There are moments in our lives that are significant, moving and profound which can root us in faith for our entire lives. The emphasis in this Gospel reading is on where we plant ourselves. However, assuming we are sown in an appropriate place, it must be remembered that bearing fruit takes more time than we may like. Immediate gratification may be a physical reality for us today, but the spiritual reality is that the things which are beautiful, and worth being planted, require regular attention over extended periods of time. Similarly, our souls need regular exposure to Christ in the Sacraments and prayer so that it may fully bloom. Holiness is not an on and off switch, but a gradual process of tending more and more to the soul that God has gifted to us. Do not be discouraged in the journey and know that growth requires time.

How can I tend to my soul this week?

Lord, give us the grace and wisdom to proactively attend to the soul which you have imparted to us.
