Blinded to the Praise

By Israel A Hernandez
During my resent silent retreat, the priest directing the retreat told us a story...

1 Samuel 18:9; 19:1

"And from that day on, Saul was jealous of David. Saul discussed his intention of killing David with his son Jonathan and with all his servants."

During my resent silent retreat, the priest directing the retreat told us a story. He said, "There is a Pastor I know who was praised for doing a good job with mentoring his associate priest. This priest was young, and the family wanted to let their Pastor know that this priest was doing a really good job. However, instead of hearing the praise, the Pastor got frustrated and replied, 'Well, what about me? Aren't I doing a good job.'" This pastor was blinded to the praise being given to him, just like Saul in todays reading.

How easily many of us fall into this same trap that the evil one likes to place in front of us. How easy we face plant right into jealously. To be honest, it can just catch us off guard. Many of us do not even realize it, until someone else calls us out on it. That's what makes this trap so sinister. However, once we recognize it, it is important that we run straight to God. Next step, is to apologize for being jealous. Last step, remember to go to reconciliation and allow his mercy and forgiveness to shower over you.

Did you know...

As I continue to prepare for Diaconate Ordination on April 25th of this year, I had the opportunity to enter into silence for an entire week. In the silence, the Lord invited me to dive into a deeper relationship with the Blessed Mother. As I did, I was reminded of the tenderness of a Mothers heart and how this tenderness will help me, not only as a soon to be Deacon, but priest one day as well.
