"Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled."
Luke 1:45
Elizabeth knew that her cousin was a young woman of faith. Mary might not have understood all that was happening, but she said YES to the messenger. What she did next spoke volumes about who she was. She set out to her cousin who might have needed her assistance and who might have helped her in her own time of need as she tried to fathom all that was happening. She did not remain alone trying to figure things out. She reached out to another. Mary gives us a model for our own living out our faith. God asks for our YES to God’s will and asks that we not “go it alone” but that we share with one another our faith, our joys, our sorrows, our confusion, and our hope. Both joy and sorrow are wrapped in mystery. We see the joy of the lover seeking out the beloved and rejoice that we are given that image of how God is with us. We know that great sorrow will accompany the life of Mary and Elizabeth’s sons. Our own lives have both great joy and great sorrow. Mary and Elizabeth can be our companions.
With whom can you share your joys and sorrows?
Mary and Elizabeth teach me to have your open spirits and live in the great mystery of God's love. Amen
