Big Fixer

By Reinaldo A Jara
The verbs in today's passage are actually translated: keep on asking, keep on seeking, keep on knocking...

Mt 7:7,11

In praying, do not babble like the pagans, who think that they will be heard because of their many words° Give us today our daily bread

The verbs in today's passage are actually translated: keep on asking, keep on seeking, keep on knocking. The line about ask, seek and knock, then, are talking about perseverance in prayer. Many times, we pray and turn to God only to ask him for things or when we are in need. But prayer is much more than asking things of God. And God is much more than a Big Fixer. He is our Father, as Jesus in the Gospel tells us. We pray so that we can be in relationship with him.

God is a good Father who will give us not only what we want but what we need. When we persevere in prayer, we grow in trust of him as well. The more we pray, the more we will be able to either understand his ways or more than likely, give up trying to understand his ways and realize his ways are mysterious but always for our good.
