Between Battle Lines

By Fr. Chuck Dornquast
Around the age of 20, the convert refused his pay...

"Not because of any righteous deeds we had done but because of his mercy, he saved us through the bath of rebirth and renewal by the holy Spirit, whom he richly poured out on us through Jesus Christ our savior, so that we might be justified by his grace and become heirs in hope of eternal life." - Titus 3:5-7

Around the age of 20, the convert refused his pay. He then announced that he would not join in the combat making him perhaps the first recognized conscientious objector in recorded history. He was accused of cowardice. He chose though to demonstrate his faith by going into the battle unarmed. St. Martin of Tours is often remembered for the way he tore away his own cloak to provide for a beggar. That night while dreaming, it was revealed to St. Martin that he had in fact given half of his cloak to Christ. His is the example of a man whose faith determines the decisions of his life. His relationship with Jesus Christ was more than a decoration on a wall or a place where he went for a "nod of approval" when he wanted something his way. St. Martin truly gave his life to Christ and allowed the Holy Spirt to be richly poured out on him.

May you and I imitate the courage of St. Martin who allowed his Faith to be at the forefront of his decision making.

In what battle is the Lord inviting you to rely upon Him?

Father, help me to have the courage of St. Martin.
