Be faithful, not fearful

By Br. Lucius Amarillas
Today's readings offer us an important reminder that there is no room for fear on our journey of Courageously Living the Gospel...

"Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen." - Hebrews 11:1

Today's readings offer us an important reminder that there is no room for fear on our journey of Courageously Living the Gospel. The recollection in our first reading and Gospel makes me recall the fear that may creep into our lives and vocations. Particularly, when I was initially discerning monastic life, I was worried that I wasn't "good enough" or "ready" to be a monk. Had I listened to those fears and chose to avoid monastic life, I don't know where I would be today, or if I would indeed be happy or fulfilling what the Lord needs me to do.

Abraham's example of faith should be an inspiring challenge for us to live by faith rather than fear. ? There are many moments or temptations, especially throughout the past year, where we may be afraid or doubtful. As we hear today, even the apostles were fearful. Yet, as we grow more familiar with salvation history and the saints' lives, we see that fear is what God's people strived to overcome. "Faith, not fear," should be our motto as followers of Christ. It may not be too easy to avoid the temptations of fear that we may face, but we are not alone; as our sacred readings proclaim, the Lord "has come to His people."

As we seek to proclaim the Good News that we hear in our local Church communities, we should examine if fear is what we demonstrate or proclaim to those around us. Are we choosing to let our fears stop us from living our vocations and inviting others to do the same?

"My Lord and my God, move me to be faithful instead of fearful."
