1 Kings 2:3
Keep the mandate of the LORD, your God, walking in his ways and keeping his statutes, commands, ordinances, and decrees as they are written in the law of Moses, that you may succeed in whatever you do, and wherever you turn.
Now that I have kids and am in my 50's, the thought often crosses my mind about my children and how they will be when I'm gone. Did I teach them well? Can they handle life's challenges? Can they deal with others when times are tough? Will they compromise their values for a short cut, or will they stay true to the principles and commandments that they've been taught?
Today's reading from the first book of Kings finds David saying goodbye to his son Solomon. David's life was not always pure and wholesome. But he wants to make sure that before he leaves his son for good, he reminds Solomon of what really matters in this life…following God. For all of us to succeed in this life, we need to always be mindful of God's laws and decrees, and abide by these teachings to the fullest. We must always be a living example for others of a person that lives on the path of God.
