Bad Renters

By John Morris
Do we do our best to produce good fruit for the church...

Matthew 21:43

Therefore, I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that will produce its fruit.

The word "stewardship" evokes many images.  Most equate stewardship to giving money to the church.  But stewardship is much more than that.  In nutshell, God gives us everything, and we are called as Christians to take care of everything. This includes our families, our bodies, the earth and all that is in it.  However if we don't take care of things, creation is destroyed.  Those things that we care about are taken away.

Jesus tells in Matthew's gospel today about the evil tenants who beat the land owner's servants and even the landowner's own son out of greed and jealousy.   The land owner had these bad tenants put to death and hired new tenants to watch over things.  The comparison is stark and bold.  God is the land owner, we are the tenants.  The land owner's son is Jesus.  So, are we good tenants or bad tenants? Are we good stewards or bad stewards of his property?  Do we do all we can to grow God's harvest into its fullest potential?  Do we do our best to produce good fruit for the church by bringing others to Christ?  Do we sit idly by in our own world and not care about others?  Use this lent to think about your life and how you are serving God and each other.
