Are You Still Searching?

By Fr. Izzie Hernandez
Since the beginning of time, people have searched for incorruptibility and immortality...

“When this which is corruptible clothes itself with incorruptibility and this which is mortal clothes itself with immortality, then the word that is written shall come about: Death is swallowed up in victory.”

1 Cor. 15:54

Since the beginning of time, people have searched for incorruptibility and immortality. They sought them in order to defeat death. There are stories, books, television shows, movies, art, etc. which all speak to this reality. Some tried creating potions in order to live longer, only to kill themselves and others through experimentation. Some people searched for a body of water that would make them young, known as the Fountain of Youth. Others tried creating life on their own, but instead created a monster, who we call Frankenstein.  Despite human beings’ best efforts, no one could figure out the solution to conquering death, immortality, or incorruptibility.

That is… until God became man. It is in and through Jesus, that we become incorruptible, immortal, and death loses its sting. Therefore, why are people still searching for these things, when we as Catholics have them at our fingertips? Listen to the Letter to the Corinthians and clothe yourself with incorruptibility and immortality. How? By putting on Jesus Christ and being part of the Body of Christ. A body that “IS” incorruptible, immortal, and has defeated death. No need to search for what has already been given to you. Simply run to Jesus.

Do I trust in God’s promise of incorruptibility and immortality, or do I still search for these things in the world?

Lord God, thank you for the gift of eternal life. Help us to remain part of the Body of Christ.
