Are You Old Guard?

By John Morris
Change can be very difficult and cause...

Wisdom 2:21-22

For their wickedness blinded them, and they knew not the hidden counsels of God.

Change can be difficult.  Starting at a new school, new job, even a new way of doing things at work…all of these can be times of adjustment.  A new boss, a new teacher, a co-worker…these times can be difficult.  It's when those times become such that anger and hatred creep into your thinking that it can become emotionally, mentally and spiritually dangerous.  Part of it has to do with acceptance of the change.  Some has to do with changing YOUR way of thinking to get in line with THEIR way.  Most of the time it's in the way these changes or adaptations are communicated (or not) that a threat can be perceived.

For generations, the leadership of the temple—the high priests, the scribes, Pharisees, all were set in their ways.  They knew the old traditions and ways of doing thing.  For example, the right way to worship, the appropriate way to sacrifice, the right days to work , the proper way to be clean.  We read about these ways in the Old Testament.  Now Jesus comes along with a new way of thinking, a new way to look at the world and the people in it.  The regular people accepted the teachings of Jesus, however it served as a threat to the 'old guard.' In fact they wanted to do him in.  But we know the rest of the story.  When change comes in your life, always remember that it's not your will that is to be done, but God's will.  Be open to God's graces and opportunities for growth and change.
