Already Victorious

By Fr. Chuck Dornquast
The Catholic Church reads and has always read the book of Revelation differently...

"On the sea of glass were standing those who had won the victory over the beast and its image and the number that signified its name. They were holding God's harps, and they sang the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb." - Rev. 15: 2-3

The Catholic Church reads and has always read the book of Revelation differently. From the time of the Early Church Fathers, this book has not been taught as a means of interpreting the end times but rather a message of hope to the Christian community in a time of persecution. The book of Revelation is a call to faithfulness for the Christian community and conversion to those who persecute.

Today's reading reminds us of those original Christians who persevered in their faith against the murderous beast, emperor Nero. Those members of the family of Christ are shown holding God's harps and singing the song of Moses. This scripture isn't about a future victory but rather a victory which we have already won! In the midst of our daily struggles to live our faith and persevere in fidelity, let us remember the hope of the many who have gone before us in giving witness to the faith.

How might I remember that the Lord already possess the victory?

Jesus, help me to hold fast with the many witnesses of faith which have gone before me.
