Luke 6:39-40 Jesus told his disciples a parable, "Can a blind person guide a blind person? Will not both fall into a pit? No disciple is superior to the teacher; but when fully trained, every disciple will be like his teacher.
Jesus begins this week's parable from St Luke asking the question, "Can a blind person guide a blind person? Will not both fall into a pit? No disciple is superior to his teacher, but after fully trained will be like his teacher." Jesus knows that he is being observed by church officials, many asking themselves, "who is this man who claims he is the savior?" How can he know what he knows? Jesus then offers this parable for all to consider. It is somewhat humbling to not have an answer to a question, or to admit not knowing the way. It does take humility and courage to admit when you don't know, and can admit that you need help. Our pride often blinds us to what is truth vs want we want to be true. We see this even in our workplaces, in our homes, in the news, and unfortunately even in our own churches. History has shown us that even our church officials, priests and bishops, have been blinded by personal ambition, pride, selfishness, or in trying to fix an issue, made the wrong choice. Instead of doing things on our own, we should follow the path of righteousness, that of Jesus. For Jesus is the light, Jesus is THE teacher. Christ himself says that the student can one day be like the teacher if fully trained. Christians aren't Christ. Priests and bishops aren't either; but we can learn his ways and live in ways, we can bring others to Christ by being a living example of what Jesus represents. That means we can help spread hope, love, peace, joy, kindness and compassion. Take these words of Jesus to heart today. Don't' be so judgmental, and make sure that what you say produces good fruit for those that listen. And if you don't know something, then have the courage to ask. Simple life directions that will go a long way.
