Luke 10:2
He said to them, "The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest."
My son is now in his late teens. Over the last few years I have tried to show him how to do certain things around the house that are normally, "guy chores." Things like changing a tire, oil, working an ax and chainsaw properly, working on the lawn mower, etc. I've even found myself saying, "look son, I'm not going to be here forever to show you this stuff, and these are things you need to know, so pay attention." I made him get his hands dirty and do some of it with me watching. I could have said, "watch this video or read these instructions. Now, go." More often than not, you learn by doing.
Today's reading from Luke's gospel has Jesus sending out the 72 with instructions on how to spread his message. Like a loving parent, Jesus knows he will not be with them, in body, to do the work. He's counting on them to step up. He wants them to step up, not only for his mission, but for their own good and for others. Jesus doesn't just send them out and say, "Ok, you've watched me in action, now go to it." No, he gives them instructions on what to pack, what to do in the face of adversity and how much money they might need. Today's message is that we are all called to be laborers for Christ. We don't need expensive clothes, a bunch of money or anything else of that nature. What we do need is the holy boldness to say yes, carry the scriptures with us, and to have a heart of love. You will not learn if you don't do it. Roll up your sleeves today and get into a weekly bible study. if you don't go to church, join one because regular church attendance is important. Tell others about this radio station and soon you'll find yourself growing in faith and bringing home the harvest!
