A New Song

By Fr. Justin Paskert
I have never been accused of having a good singing voice...

"Sing to the Lord a new song"

Psalm 149:1

I have never been accused of having a good singing voice. That has never stopped me from enjoying music. It constantly amazes me how much power music has. A simple refrain can turn into a thought running through my head all day.  Music has often changed my mood or influenced my thoughts. Sad songs have helped me grieve and fun songs have helped me rejoice.  A song that I will never forget is the first one I memorized all the words. I was at mass when I realized that I could sing all the words for “Hosanna in the Highest”.

It was many years later that I began to appreciate the significance of that song.  It is the hymn sung by all the angels and saints in heaven for all of eternity.  It is literally the music of heaven.  “Sing a new song!” The command from Psalm 149 is a command to praise.  God’s gift of music is a powerful gift of prayer. But He doesn’t tell us to sing an old song on repeat. A new song requires new material.  God has already done so much for us, but He is also still doing even more today.  At this very moment, today is full of God’s grace and a reason to give Him praise. So let us sing a new song.

What is God doing in my life today?

What wonderful gifts of grace can I, in turn, praise Him for in song?
