A Moment to Rest

By Kenny Keenan
Jesus' arrival in Jerusalem is meant to usher a new kind of peace...

Luke 19:41-42

As he drew near, he saw the city and wept over it, saying, "If this day you only knew what makes for peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes.

In today's Gospel reading, we see Jesus weeping as he is entering the city of Jerusalem: "As he drew near, he saw the city and wept over it, saying, "If this day you only knew what makes for peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes." Jesus' arrival in Jerusalem is meant to usher a new kind of peace. Yet, Jesus weeps because of the many people who will reject him out of hardness of heart.

Each day, I am faced with trusting in Jesus or trusting in my own strength and understanding. With the end of the seminary's semester approaching, it is easy for me to neglect prayer in order to get assignments done. I find, when I try to manage all of life's circumstances on my own, I tend to find myself operating within a spirit of anxiousness and stress.

In this busy-ness, we can miss the areas of our heart which Jesus hopes to enter and bring peace, much as Jesus entered Jerusalem, desiring to bring his peace. Often, Jesus is asking us to take a moment to simply rest in His arms. This peace will carry us as we are called to our daily responsibilities.
