A Fishy Sacrifice

By John Morris
Maybe instead of vegging in front of the tv, computer or smart phone...

Luke 9:23

Then he said to all, “If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”

Tomorrow is the first Friday of Lent.  The Church encourages us to deny ourselves meat on Fridays and substitute meat for fish or some other lesser meal.  But let’s be honest.  Is this really a tremendous sacrifice?  Is giving up chocolate, soda, alcohol or social media a huge sacrifice?  It might be for some of us.  God is calling us to deny ourselves entirely and come to Him.  We are called by Jesus to look at those things in our lives that keep us from living a life in Him.  It might be excessive food, drink, pornography, foul language, even wasting time instead of helping others.  Maybe instead of vegging in front of the TV, smart phone or computer, spend time in scripture, meditating on God’s word.  Spend some time in the chapel in quiet and try to listen to what God is calling you to do.  Use this start of Lent assess what you are doing in your life that needs to change and make the change today.  You’ll be better for it.
