A Fine Catch

By John Morris
Are you just another fish or do you want to be a trophy catch?

Matthew 13:47-48

Jesus said to the disciples: "The Kingdom of heaven is like a net thrown into the sea, which collects fish of every kind. When it is full they haul it ashore and sit down to put what is good into buckets. What is bad they throw away."

I enjoy fishing and throwing a cast net. Part of the thrill or surprise is that you never know what is on the end of the line or in the net until you pull it in.  Most of the time it is a catch worth keeping, hence the phrase, "he or she is a keeper."  Today's gospel finds Jesus sharing the analogy of heaven and fishing.  (Remember that he was dealing with fishermen, so he needed to speak their "language").  It's the unwanted catch that can be troubling.  Spiny catfish, jellyfish and other potentially dangerous fish or objects can get caught in the net and keep the good catch out.  Jesus is also comparing us to the fish.  Are you a good fish worthy of heaven, or something dangerous, keeping yourself and others from heaven?  Strive to be worthy of heaven by prayer, worship and helping your neighbors.  That way, Jesus will say to you, "You're not only a keeper, but a fine trophy to show off to others!" (that's a saint!)
