A Courageous House

By Br. Lucius Amarillas
Today's Gospel offers not only a memorable image but a challenge for Jesus' listeners...

"That one is like a man building a house, who dug deeply and laid the foundation on rock; when the flood came, the river burst against that house but could not shake it because it had been well built."

Luke 6:48

Today's Gospel offers not only a memorable image but a challenge for Jesus' listeners; especially, us who mourn the tragic attack on our country twenty years ago. Today, Jesus admonishes His listeners to discern how well they are living His commands and presents an image of fidelity for all to emulate, a house that is not destroyed despite the disasters thrust its way.   As we consider how well we are living what Jesus commands us, let us look to the courageous example of those who have helped our nation and Church withstand the tragedies that have burst against us. Especially the immense courage of those who raced to heal, treat, or defend our brothers and sisters on this tragic day and those following it. Following the vast wounds inflicted on us, here we are; we have come this far as a community striving to live the Gospel courageously, but there is still work to be done!

Like the man who built his house on a solid foundation, let us consider how well we are continuing to build our Church communities on the same rock by listening to Jesus' words and acting on them. I invite all to join me in offering a moment of silence for the many victims of September 11, 2001, and to pray for the courage to continue living the Gospel amid the "floods" that burst against us.

Our help is in your Name, O Lord, help us emulate your Name!
