Luke 10:2
He said to them, "The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest."
My son is now in his late teens. The last few years I have tried to show him how to do certain things around the house that are normally "guy chores". Things like changing a tire, oil, working an ax and chainsaw properly, working on the lawn mower, etc. I've even found myself saying, "look son, I'm not going to be here forever to show you this stuff, and these are things you need to know, so pay attention." I made him get his hands dirty and do some of it with me watching.
Today's reading from Luke's gospel has Jesus sending out the 72 with instructions on how to spread his message. Jesus doesn't just send them out and say, "ok, you've watched me in action, now go to it." No, he gives them instructions on what to pack, what to do in the face of adversity and how much money they might need. Today's message is that we are all called to be laborers for Christ. We don't need expensive clothes, a bunch of money or anything else of that nature. What we do need is the holy boldness to say yes, carry the scriptures with us, and to have a heart of love. Weekly bible study, regular church attendance, this radio station, and a solid prayer life will help us all become effective laborers for God's kingdom.
