Sheep Lesson

By Sr. Mary David Hydro

"Come away by yourselves & rest a while"

Mark 6:31

I'm a Miami girl, born and raised there, so I don't know much about sheep… but I was impressed when I learned that they know to follow their shepherd's voice so they don't get lost or go hungry.

The Gospel today says Jesus "was moved with pity" for the crowd, "for they were like sheep without a shepherd." No doubt, Jesus feels the same today… many don't know, listen or follow. In our world there is so much noise/chatter that people can't hear God's voice, or even that of others.

In the Gospel, Jesus tells his tired apostles (& us) "Come away by yourselves & rest awhile.” Perhaps like them, we've been busy doing good deeds... and have forgotten the Benedictine Balance of Prayer & Work.

Being is more important than doing;  Being leads to doing/living the Gospel.

I invite/challenge you:  Make time daily for prayer that refreshes/strengthens you.

Pra Psalm 119: Lord, teach me with all my heart I seek You... in Your way I rejoice.

Encounter Christ in today's Scripture & He will reply with a smile, "My sheep hear my voice.  I know them & they follow me."

Is a regular time for prayer/reflection part of your daily schedule?

Good Shepherd, help me seek to listen for Your voice, to follow & rest in You; then every day I will be able to Live the Gospel.
