Memorial of St. Maximillian Kolbe

By Sister Marlene
Much of Maximilian Kolbe's life brings to mind "Schindler's List"...

"Greater love has no one, than to lay down his life for his friend, says the Lord."

John 15:13 Memorial of Saint Maximilian Mary Kolbe, priest and martyr

Much of Maximilian Kolbe's life brings to mind "Schindler's List".  Raimund Kolbe was born in Russian Poland, and after entering the Franciscan Order took the name of Maximilian Maria.  After the Nazi conquest of Poland, he helped thousands of refugees, including Jews.  Arrested by the Gestapo, he was sent to Auschwitz.  In retaliation for the escape of a prisoner, the Nazis chose ten men at random to be executed.  One of these men was the father of a young family and Fr. Kolbe offered to take his place.  His offer was accepted and he was left to slowly starve to death as a result. For two weeks he lay naked in his cell, singing hymns to Mary when the Nazis decided to hasten his death by injecting phenol into his system.  Father Maximilian Kolbe was thus able to celebrate the feast of the Assumption in heaven.

What can the life of this humble friar say to us, today?  His love for Mary sustained him and his love and care for his fellow man led him to selfless sacrifice.  How often do I have an opportunity to love and serve others, perhaps not in the manner of St. Maximilian but as I am able?

Good and Gracious God, open my heart to the needs of those whom you put on my path.  Let your love shine through me and give me the wisdom to act out of love and care.
