John 10:27
My sheep hear my voice, says the Lord;
I know them, and they follow me.
I have not really been around too many sheep, but I have been around some goats lately. They are very social, and will walk right up to me and start trying to nibble on my jacket. They are looking for the ginger snaps which they know I will have for them in my pocket. It would be very interesting to try and lead them anywhere, because they are fairly large, and probably fairly heavy, so I do not think I could leash and lead them. I think they would roam all over if I tried to take them out for a walk.
Such a funny thought to me, leading goats about, but I now I wonder how far apart are we metaphorically from the goats? Since we have a free will, are we like the goats who only look for the sweets (in the pocket of God)? Do we take only what we need for us to survive, or what we can, (nibble) out of life without regard to others' needs? Or, can we be like sheep in this passage from John 10, the sheep who immediately recognize Christ? In our every day lives, we can seek to follow him more closely. In order to be like the sheep and recognize His voice, we need to learn more about God and get to know Him well.
