Downsizing

Monday, October 22, 2018 • Davis
Sometimes our life gets downsized by unforeseen circumstances...

Luke 12:20-21

But God said to him, 'You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?' Thus will it be for the one who stores up treasure for himself but is not rich in what matters to God."

When was the last time you downsized your life? I had to downsize for a move to Colorado back in 2007. It was tough. But I did feel a little relief cutting my personal possessions by more than half. That lightening of my load was intentional. Sometimes our life gets downsized by unforeseen circumstances. I'm sure the people recovering from the devastation of hurricane Michael don't feel much relief in their loss of homes and personal items.

In today's gospel Jesus is admonishing a man for being caught up in worldly possessions. He tells the parable of the rich man who decides to build bigger barns to hold all his stuff. But then his life is cut short. The man is told he paid too much attention to things that don't matter eternally.  I'm not saying we can't have nice things. We just need to remember not to let things get between us and our relationship with God. Maybe it's time for you to pay a little more attention to eternal things. Take a look at your life today and see if you need to do any downsizing?
