Daily Scripture Reflections

He's Already Here

Thursday, November 15, 2018 • John Morris
How often do you hear people say, "Aw, you missed it?"

Luke 17:24

For just as lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one side to the other, so will the Son of Man be in his day.

I'm sure you've witnessed or been in a big thunderstorm.  They are one of God's great creations.  We were at the beach one night and across the water was a huge storm.  The light show from the lightning was spectacular.  But if you looked away for a moment, you might have missed some of it.  Lightning has great beauty and power.  It can make a dark night become light for a brief moment.  It certainly can be scary too.  It's Heaven's Fireworks. (You won't see that on I-95 in South Carolina!)

The Pharisees inquired of Jesus about when the Kingdom of God would come and save the Jews.  They were looking for a great chariot of fire or something literally earth-shattering to signal the arrival.  But Jesus says it's already here.  "The coming of the kingdom cannot be observed or announced."  No one will say, "Look, here it is!"  The kingdom is not an object.  Jesus says the Son of Man like lightning, flashes and lights up the sky.  For the Pharisees (and others), Jesus and his words were just part of ordinary life.  They didn't recognize, or didn't want to recognize Jesus as the Son of God.  They already had a preconceived notion of what it would be like.  They had it labeled.  Pray today for the wisdom to see God in others around you and that the Holy Spirit work through you so that you are Jesus for others.
