The Niwano Peace Foundation was initiated by the Japanese citizen Nikkyo Niwano, founder of the Buddhist lay organization Rissho Kosei Kai, who was one of the few non-Christian observers at the Second Vatican Council. His son, Nichiko Niwano, is his successor as chairman of the foundation, which is dedicated to interreligious dialogue and peace.
Born in Jerusalem, the 66-year old Bishop Younan has been president of the Lutheran World Federation since 2010. He played host Pope Francis in the Lutheran Cathedral of Lund, Sweden on Oct. 31, 2016, on the occasion of the start of the celebrations of 500 years of Protestant Reformation, initiated by Martin Luther. At Lund, Bishop Younan and Pope Francis signed a Joint Statement whereby Catholics and Lutherans pledged to pursue their dialogue towards full unity and committed themselves to work for the poor, the needy and the victims of injustice.
During his long career Bishp Younan has held numerous positions in Lutheran organizations and interreligious – he was also president of the Lutheran Council in Asia - and used his position to create a fully-fledged network among religious leaders of different faiths in the Middle East .
Bishop Younan was one of 14 religious leaders who signed the Declaration of Alexandria in 2002, a document in which rabbis, sheikhs, and bishops assured their commitment to establish peace in the Holy Land, which is holy for all three monotheistic religions.
A statue of Mary was decapitated by vandals early Sunday morning in the western Indian city of Mumbai, and local Catholics allege the attack is a deliberate attempt to intimidate Christians from voting for candidates from their community in the upcoming local elections. Father Nigel Barrett, spokesman of Bombay Archdiocese told UCANEWS that some men on two motorbikes came on Feb. 19 and smashed the glass-encased statue in the Kurla suburb of the city, decapitating it. He said they were waiting for what the police have to say after investigation, but Joseph Dias, a Catholic leader and founder of the Mumbai-based Catholic Secular Forum, said, “it is directly related to the elections.” “It was a deliberate attempt to create a fear psychosis among the people as the area is Catholic dominated," he told UCANEWS.Civic elections in the city are scheduled for Feb. 21 and Christians have been campaigning for political parties to back their choice in ...

Civic elections in the city are scheduled for Feb. 21 and Christians have been campaigning for political parties to back their choice in Christian-dominated areas as candidates. The umbrella group of some 100-odd Catholic organizations and groups called the Church in the City, claims to represent some 500,000 Catholics in the city. Dias said their campaign has put an "unusually big" number of Catholic candidates in the fray in Christian dominated areas and some political parties are now worried. "They are making attempts to frighten Catholics not to come out and vote," he said.
For administrative purposes, the city is divided into six zones each having a deputy municipal commissioner. The zones together coordinate 23 wards and more than 250 councilor wards under each ward. Some of the councilor wards are Catholic dominated areas. However, police refused to attribute any motive to the attack. (Source: UCAN)

The Pope’s visit comes as part of celebrations for the 200th anniversary of the first Church of England Eucharist, which took place in the so-called ‘English ghetto’ near the Spanish steps on October 27th 1816. He will be the first pope to visit an Anglican Church in his own Diocese of Rome.
Members of All Saints and Ognissanti have worked together informally for almost a decade, attending each other’s liturgical celebrations and providing services to the hungry and homeless. The Catholic parish of Ognissanti on the Via Appia Nuova is the titular church of Cardinal Walter Kasper, former president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity. It's also the place where Pope Paul VI celebrated the first Mass in Italian in March 1965, following the liturgical reforms of the Second Vatican Council.
Cardinal Kasper spoke to Philippa Hitchen about the pastoral outreach of his parish and about the importance of Sunday’s papal visit to All Saints..
Listen:
Cardinal Kasper says the Pope’s visit to All Saints’ community is a further step marking “the growing of our relationship”: Pope Francis presence as the Bishop of Rome, he says, is “very significant”. Noting that he is the titular cardinal of the Catholic parish of Ognissanti, twinned with All Saints, he says “for me it's a very joyful event” which will help to further those ecumenical relations.
These relations, the cardinal continues, don't just grow through theological dialogue, even though that is important, but also through personal contact and especially by praying together. He notes that Jesus did not “make an imperative to have unity” but rather he “prayed that all may be one” and ecumenism, he says, is the “sharing of this prayer of Our Lord”
Sunday’s liturgy will include a renewal of baptismal vows and Cardinal Kasper stresses that being “baptized together in the same Lord Jesus Christ” is the foundation of the ecumenical movement. Today, he says, all baptized Christians “have to stand together and give common witness” against violence and terrorism, seeking to promote justice and peace and learning that “what we have in common is more than what divides us”.
Ognissanti, the cardinal notes, is a very lively parish which is engaged in much pastoral work and open to the challenges facing all Christians today. It has worked especially with the migrant community, including the provision of rooms for women migrants who have come to Rome needing a place to stay.
