Morelos State Governor Graco Ramírez has declared: "The Government will not be intimidated by organized crime." Accordingly, he has ordered State Pólice to take control of 15 cities, towns and municipalities away from local Municipal Pólice. This follows the assassination of Gisela Mota, on Saturday. less than 24 hours after she'd been inaugurated Mayor  of Temixco. She was gunned down in her home. Pólice shot dead two of her attackers and arrested three others, including a 32 year old woman, an 18 year old man and a youth.

The Bishop of Cuernavaca Ramon Castro held a mass at Gisela Mota's home on Sunday, before her funeral.

Drug cartels often target figures of respect, authority and power to intimidate the rest of the community.  The State Governor is pressing for State Pólice to hold control of all law and order matters.  Gisela Mota supported this proposal, but not all Mayors want to relinquish this power to the State.

Vatican City, Jan 4, 2016 / 02:02 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- Pope Francis made a surprise visit Monday to the Italian hill town of Greccio where, centuries earlier, St. Francis created the first nativity scene.

The Jan. 4 visit to the town included a stop at the Sanctuary of the manger scene (“Santuario del presepe”), where the Pope met with members of the Franciscan order. There, he prayed before a 15th century fresco depicting the nativity scene of Greccio on one side, and the nativity of Greccio on the other.

Earlier in the afternoon, the Pope also met with a group of young people who had gathered for a diocesan youth event in Greccio.

Pope Francis was welcomed to the town by Bishop Domenico Pompili of Rieti, the only person informed ahead of time of the pontiff’s arrival, according to the Italian agency Avvenire.

The reason for the Pope’s visit was for “personal prayer,” Avvenire reports.

The Pope concluded his brief stay in the hillside town at 3:30 p.m. and returned to Rome by car – namely, his Ford Focus.

Located in the Rieti province north of Rome, the Sanctuary of Greccio marks the site where the Christmas nativity scene was first recreated by St. Francis on Dec. 25, 1223, the same year the rule of the Franciscan order was approved by Pope Honorius III.

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Pope Francis will deliver his monthly prayer intentions on video over social media as part of a Jesuit-run global prayer network.

The new video messages, featuring the pope asking for prayers and action on various challenges facing the world today, will begin Jan. 6, the feast of the Epiphany of the Lord.

Often people are inundated with so much bad news that they might feel helpless, but "to pray together with Pope Francis for these challenges will us help a lot," Jesuit Father Frederic Fornos told Vatican Radio Jan. 4.

The Jesuit priest is the head of the international Apostleship of Prayer, a Jesuit-run outreach that has given Catholics the pope's monthly prayer intentions since 1890.

Working with the Vatican Television Center, the apostleship will launch the monthly videos of the pope's universal prayer intentions on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube.

While the pope will speak in Spanish, the videos will have subtitles for a total of 10 languages, Father Fornos said.

Pope Francis' general prayer intentions for 2016 will include: greater care for creation; more support for families in difficulty; just compensation for small farmers; greater respect for women and indigenous peoples; helping sports contribute to peace; encouraging journalists to respect truth and be more ethical; greater support for countries that take in refugees; and an end to the use of child soldiers.
