‘Home of Mercy’ an initiative was launched on July 13 at the Radio Veritas 846 Chapel  in Manila to bring the spirituality of the Jubilee Year in the homes of the faithful.

The “Home of Mercy”, a religious ornament that may be installed in the main door of the homes to welcome the unwavering mercy of God was launched at the Eucharistic Celebration presided over by  Most Rev. Honesto Ongtioco, Bishop of Cubao, Philippines.

Radio Veritas President Rev. Fr. Anton CT Pascual said that the “Home of Mercy” will serve as a reminder of God’s mercy, that as we are touched by His compassion every day, we can also become compassionate towards others especially to those who are in need.

“In this Jubilee Year, let us feel the presence of God’s mercy at our homes and extends it to anyone who are in need. With this home of mercy, we aim to make the mercy of the Father evident in every Christian’s home where we first learn to have faith,” Fr. Pascual said.

He added that as part of the station’s endeavor for the new evangelization, Radio Veritas will give “Home of Mercy” to full-pledge Kapanalig members to help strengthen their faith.

“As we look forward for the fifth centenary of Christianity in the Philippines in 2021, we are challenged to enter the endeavor of the New Evangelization – to believe in the Gospel message and go forth to proclaim it and to deepen our faith, and we want to start it in everyone’s home,” Fr. Pascual added.

The Kapanalig Media Community, Church Community On-Air is composed of individuals, Church institutions and organizations supporting Veritas’s social communications ministry. In turn, they are provided with formation programs, special prayer intentions, blessings by bishops during their birthdays, and are able to take part in both on-air and online promotions by Radio Veritas. To date, the community has more than 43,000 members.

Radio Veritas 846, the number one faith-based AM radio in the Philippines, is owned and operated by the Archdiocese of Manila. Established in 1969, the Ramon Magsaysay recipient Catholic radio station continues to be the leading social communications ministry for truth and evangelization in the country today. (Vatican Radio) On Monday the announcement was made that Pope Francis had chosen the American journalist, Greg Burke, to take over from Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi as director of the Holy See Press Office on August 1, when Fr Lombardi goes on pension.

It was also announced that the Spanish journalist, Paloma Garcia Ovejero, will be Burke's deputy, the first woman in history to hold that position.

Paloma is currently the Vatican correspondent for Spanish broadcaster Cadena Cope and comes to the Press Office as a Vatican expert having covered Vatican news for many years.

Linda Bordoni asked Paloma of her feelings when she heard Pope Francis had chosen her for this important position, but first she asked her to pronounce her full name:

Listen

Paloma, Garcia Ovejero was born in Madrid. She says she is proud of her name because ‘Paloma’ is the name of the Virgin Mary in Madrid and the Feast of “La Virgin Paloma’ is celebrated every year on August 15.

She says she is still reeling after having been told last Friday of Pope’s decision to choose her for her new position.

“As he often says ‘God looked at me and picked me’ and that is what I feel” she says.

And pointing out that she is only a journalist with no experience in managing a press office, Paloma agrees that she was chosen most probably for her capacity to convey a message.

She also highlights the fact that the Press Office will in fact be headed by Greg Burke “the best colleague I could ever have imagined to work for”.

Paloma says she is working closely with Father Lombardi whom she respects, admires and looks up to: “he is so tender, so smart, and so humble” and to know that he is accompanying the new team at the beginning of their endeavor is a “guarantee”.

“And not only that: the prayer. I know he will be praying for us” she says.

She says that she and Burke are stepping into a perfectly functional Press Office – only because Fr Lombardi has finished his term – and not because there is any kind of crisis. So, she says, she hopes they will continue on the path that has already been set out.

“I love going into the Press Office and I would like journalists to be happy to come to us” she says.

Paloma says perhaps, thanks to their own background as journalists, the new team may be able to work on the speed, the rhythm and some minor details to make communication and collaboration even more effective for the needs of the press.

She speaks of her own experience in a family of seven children where gender was not an issue and where everyone chipped in working together for the common good.

Across the board she has been hailed as ‘the first woman’ to hold this position but Paloma is adamant that for her it is normal as her emphasis is on professionality and the recognition of capacity rather than on gender.

“For me to be a woman (in this position) is not a question of being part of  a revolution, I think this is just a fact. When I came to the Press Office on Monday I realized how many woman there are among the journalists, in the Press Office, etc. (…) it seems obvious to me: women are everywhere… how many times has the Pope said the Church is a woman?” she exclaims.

The Norwegian Refugee Council has made an earnest appeal to South Sudan’s warring leaders to ensure that the current ceasefire is respected and that they immediately allow the safe delivery of life-saving assistance to the people.

According to the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), at least 36,000 people have been displaced by recent fighting in Juba, South Sudan.

“This latest peak of destructive internal strife can be and must be stopped immediately. Political and military leaders have the responsibility to ensure that the current ceasefire is respected. This is no natural disaster. It is a man-made disaster from A to Z,” said Secretary-General of the Norwegian Refugee Council Jan Egeland.

More than 300 people are believed to have been killed in the latest fighting, which erupted last Thursday. At least 36,000 civilians are said to have fled areas within Juba, according to the United Nations (UN). Many others have sought shelter at UN compounds, relief agencies and churches. NRC says it too has had to halt its relief work.

“We came with all our experts and all our humanitarian resources to provide education, relief and protection for the displaced. We made good progress and provided support to hundreds of thousands. Now we are forced to suspend operations in the most affected areas and worry about the security of our own staff. We cannot help South Sudan if their leaders are not willing to join forces to build their own nation,” said Egeland.

6 million people, more than half of South Sudan´s population, are in dire need of humanitarian assistance. A food shortage alarm was raised by the Norwegian Refugee Council only last week, but the recent fighting will make it even harder to reach several parts of the country with necessary assistance.

“Unless the ceasefire holds, the humanitarian situation that is already critical is likely to become worse. We need to be able to safely access people in need of food, water and shelter, or South Sudan will spiral further into a vicious circle of violence and hardship,” said NRC´s Country Director Victor Moses.

Tension has been rising in South Sudan over the last months. Renewed fighting in Wau town has displaced an estimated 83, 000 people, during the last two weeks.

The latest fighting comes after a fragile peace agreement was signed in August 2015, ending 21 months of civil war, and the establishment of a Transitional Government of National Unity in April this year.

“All these crucial efforts for peace and stability may be in vain if the renewed fighting continues”, warned Victor Moses of NRC.
