(Vatican Radio) In an impressive move to introduce a legacy of the Year of Mercy, a Scottish archbishop has launched what is thought to be the world's first GPS-powered Sacrament-finding app.

Archbishop Leo Cushley from the Archdiocese of St Andrews and Edinburgh announced the launch of 'The Catholic App' outside St Peter’s Basilica on 22nd November 2016, surrounded by pilgrims and seminarians from his archdiocese, accompanied by the sound of the Scottish bagpipe.

The app will allow users around the archdiocese to find the nearest and soonest opportunities to go to Confession and Holy Mass, as well as Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.

The archbishop called the app “a little bit of smart technology that could make a big impact on how the Catholic Church brings the mercy of God and the joy of the Gospel to our contemporary world.”

The app will be launched in conjunction with Scottish technology company Musemantik. Dr Maciej Zurawski is the founder and CEO. He said that he now hopes that other Catholic dioceses around the world will purchase the new app. He said that in a time when websites are losing popularity, it is important to engage “with the mobile generation, with an app that is smart and personal.”

Also present was Monsignor Viganò, Prefect of the Vatican’s Secretariat for Communication. He was quick to praise the launch. “I congratulate Archbishop Cushley, the Archdiocese of St Andrews and Edinburgh and the Catholic Church in Scotland for being so imaginative in responding to the Holy Father’s call to bring the mercy of God to modern society by means of modern communications.” He continued, “That’s why I’m sure that the Church in many other parts of the world will sit up and take note of this launch today.”

Vatican Radio’s Ryan Black met with Archbishop Cushley after the announcement. They spoke about the app and about the former Vatican diplomat's recent encounter with the Holy Father at the Closing Mass in St Peter's Square, when he received the Apostolic Letter, Misericordia et misera, from Pope Francis on behalf of the bishops of the world. His Grace also spoke about another Year of Mercy legacy that will be launched on the feast of the archdiocesan patron, St Andrew the Apostle.

Listen:

The Catholic App will go live in early 2017. Musemantik hope that today’s high-profile – and noisy – launch in Rome will persuade other dioceses throughout the Catholic Church to purchase the app in the weeks to come. More information about the app can be found at www.thecatholicapp.com.

(Vatican Radio) The plight of millions of migrants fleeing environmental disasters due to climate change will be addressed at a two-day conference hosted by the Pontifical Lateran University.

“The Path” international summit will discuss proposals to Italian and European political leaders on solutions to avert more social disasters caused by environmental catastrophes and will promote a politics of “welcome” to migrants.

The international conference, which takes place on 1 and 2 December, will also discuss the outcomes of last week’s “COP22” UN Climate Change Conference in Marrakech at which the summit’s president pleaded with US president elect Donald Trump to join the struggle against global warming.

According to research by CeSpi, an Italian centre for the study of international politics, about 160 million people between 2008 and 2014 were forced to migrate from their countries because of the disastrous effects of climate change. They fled to other regions or even to other continents.

The event will bring together representatives from both international secular and Catholic organisations and will be addressed by Cardinal Peter Turkson, President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace. Other speakers include those on the front line of helping migrants who arrive in Italy.

The conference is inspired by a section of Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Sii, which says “that a true ecological approach always becomes a social approach; it must integrate questions of justice in debates on the environment, so as to hear both the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor”.

Vatican City, Nov 22, 2016 / 07:43 am (CNA/EWTN News).- On Tuesday the Vatican announced the themes for the next three World Youth Day encounters, which are focused on Mary and form the basis of a spiritual journey culminating in the next global encounter in Panama in 2019.

A Nov. 22 Vatican communique revealed that the themes for 2017 and 2018 diocesan-level events as well as the international gathering in 2019 will all be taken from Chapter 1 of the Gospel of Luke, centering on Mary in the scene of the Annunciation and her Magnificat, spoken after her cousin Elizabeth’s declaration that “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.”

The theme for the 2017 gathering will be: “The Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name,” taken from Lk 1:49, while the theme for the 2018 encounter is: “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God,” which the Angel Gabriel spoke to Mary in Lk 1:30.

The three-year journey will culminate with the global encounter to be held in Panama in 2019, and which will reflect on the theme, “I am the servant of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word,” spoken by Mary after the Annunciation in Lk 1:30.

Pope Francis announced Panama as the location of the next global World Youth Day gathering on the last day of the international gathering in Krakow earlier this year.

World Youth Day (WYD) is a gathering of youths from all over the world to meet with the Pope in order to build and strengthen the bonds of faith, friendship and hope, symbolizing the union between people of different cultures and countries.

In the communique, sent by the new dicastery for Laity, Family and Life, it was noted that the spiritual path laid out by the Pope for the next three years “continues the reflection that started with the last three WYDs (2014-2016),” which were focused on the Beatitudes.

“As we know, Mary is the one that all generations call blessed,” it read, noting that in his prepared speech to WYD volunteers in Krakow, Francis pointed to Mary’s disposition, describing her “as a role model to be imitated.”

Having tossed aside his prepared remarks, the Pope told youth in his off-the-cuff comments to have “memory of the past, courage for the present and to have (and) be hope for the future.”

The three themes for the next three years, then, are meant “to give a clear Marian tone to the spiritual journey” of the next three WYD gatherings, while at the same time providing a picture of youth “on a journey between the past (2017), present (2018) and future (2019), inspired by the three theological virtues of faith, charity and hope.”

In addition to the focus on youth, the Vatican announcement said, the “spiritual journey” proposed by the Pope is also “in harmony with the reflection that Pope Francis has entrusted to the next Synod of Bishops,” which was announced Oct. 6 and follows the theme: “Young People, Faith and Vocational Discernment.”
